Aaron Ramsey, the 34-year-old Welsh midfielder and former captain of the Wales national team, has officially signed a one-year contract with Liga MX club Pumas UNAM ahead of the Apertura 2025 season. Ramsey, who previously played for notable European clubs including Arsenal, Juventus, Cardiff City, Rangers, and Nice, arrived in Mexico City in late June 2025 to complete his medical and finalize the deal. His signing marks the first time a Welsh player has joined the Mexican league. The arrival of Ramsey was publicly confirmed by Josefa González Blanco, the Mexican ambassador to the United Kingdom, who welcomed him and highlighted the role of Efraín Juárez, Pumas' head coach, in convincing Ramsey to join the club. Ramsey expressed excitement about joining a historic club and emphasized his commitment to winning titles rather than financial gain. Pumas president Luis Raúl González officially presented Ramsey, who will wear the number 10 jersey. Alongside Ramsey, Pumas also secured Colombian left-back Álvaro Angulo as a reinforcement for the Apertura 2025. Meanwhile, Pumas pursued goalkeeper reinforcements, notably attempting to sign Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Newell's Old Boys. However, negotiations stalled and ultimately failed due to financial disagreements, with Newell's demanding a transfer fee that Pumas found prohibitive. This leaves Pumas seeking other options for the goalkeeper position, with Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa remaining a potential candidate despite recent critiques and his announcement of retiring from the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Additionally, Ecuadorian midfielder Pedro Vite has arrived in Mexico City to finalize his signing with Pumas, further strengthening the squad under Efraín Juárez's leadership.
