Xin Xin, the only giant panda in Latin America and the only known giant panda not owned by China, celebrated her 35th birthday at the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City on June 29, 2025. Born in captivity in Mexico as a descendant of two pandas gifted by China in 1975, Xin Xin is recognized as one of the oldest living pandas in the world, with her age equivalent to approximately 110 human years. The zoo hosted a large celebration featuring a special bamboo and apple cake, traditional Chinese lion dances, music, and a cultural parade. The event drew over 40,000 visitors and included collaborations with the Mexican Secretariat of Environment, the China Cultural Center in Mexico, and the Mexico-China Cultural Exchange Association. Despite surpassing the typical giant panda lifespan of 20 to 25 years, Xin Xin is now in the final stage of her life, as noted by Julia Álvarez Icaza, head of Mexico City's Secretariat of Environment (SEDEMA). In honor of Xin Xin’s milestone, a commemorative lottery ticket was unveiled by Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada, further highlighting her status as a symbol of conservation and hope in Mexico. The celebration underscored Xin Xin’s unique status as the last giant panda born in Mexico and a cherished national icon.
