U.S. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark said Monday she does not believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, reversing comments she made at a district event last week that appeared to describe the conflict as “genocide.” In a statement released to the Jewish News Syndicate, the Massachusetts Democrat said, “I am not accusing Israel of genocide,” adding that her priority is to secure the release of Israeli hostages, increase humanitarian aid to Palestinians and end the war. Clark’s earlier use of the term during an Aug. 14 forum in Cambridge was circulated online, briefly making her the highest-ranking congressional Democrat to invoke the politically charged label. Fewer than 15 House members have used the word to describe Israel’s campaign, and none in leadership positions. The episode underscores the delicate line Democratic leaders are attempting to walk as internal divisions over the 22-month-old Israel-Hamas conflict persist.
