Israeli fighter jets struck multiple Houthi-controlled sites in Yemen’s capital on 24 August, hitting a compound that includes the presidential palace, the Asar and Hizaz power plants and an adjacent fuel depot. Houthi authorities said the raid killed at least two people and wounded 35, while the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the facilities as military infrastructure used for recent missile and drone launches against Israel, including a projectile equipped with cluster munitions fired days earlier toward Ben Gurion Airport. On 28 August Israel carried out a second wave of precision strikes in Sanaa, this time aiming at what it called a gathering of senior Houthi officials. Explosions were reported near the presidential complex and in a southern neighbourhood where Yemeni sources said commanders had assembled to watch a televised speech by rebel leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi. Israeli media, citing security officials, said preliminary assessments indicate the Houthi defence minister, Muhammad al-Atifi, the group’s chief of staff, Muhammad al-Ghamari, and possibly the Houthis’ prime minister, Ahmed al-Rahawi, were killed. The Houthi movement denied suffering leadership losses, and the IDF said it is still verifying the outcome of the operation. The back-to-back raids underscore the widening regional fallout from the Gaza war. The Iran-aligned Houthis have fired scores of missiles and drones at Israel and disrupted Red Sea shipping, while Israel has vowed to keep targeting Houthi infrastructure and command figures. Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that “whoever raises a hand against Israel – his hand will be cut off,” as the rebels pledged to continue operations unless Israeli attacks on Gaza cease.
