An Israeli airstrike on 10 Aug. struck a tent used by reporters outside Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, killing Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqea along with at least two other media workers, the hospital director and the network said. Video from the scene showed the makeshift press facility destroyed, and colleagues reported that the journalists had been preparing nightly coverage of ongoing fighting in the city. Within hours, the Israel Defense Forces acknowledged responsibility, saying the attack was aimed at al-Sharif, whom it described as “a cell leader in the Hamas anti-tank unit operating under the guise of a journalist.” The military did not provide evidence for the allegation. Reuters cited an IDF statement asserting that al-Sharif had helped plan rocket attacks on Israeli troops and civilians. Al Jazeera condemned the strike as a deliberate assassination and part of what it called a months-long campaign of threats and incitement against its Gaza bureau. The Government Media Office in Gaza labeled the incident a “heinous crime” and urged international bodies to protect journalists working in the enclave. The latest attack compounds Gaza’s mounting media toll: local and regional outlets put the number of journalists killed since the war erupted in late 2023 at roughly 235–237, making the territory one of the deadliest assignments for reporters in recent history.
