Israeli air and ground attacks on Saturday killed at least 33 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, according to local hospitals, with several victims struck while sheltering in tents or searching for food. The casualties came as Gaza City, besieged for 22 months, grapples with a formally declared famine. A day later, Israeli troops opened fire on a crowd moving toward a food distribution site in the Netzarim corridor south of Gaza City, killing four people, Al-Awda Hospital and eyewitnesses said. The site is regularly used by residents to reach aid supplied by the U.S.–backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification warned last week that famine is already under way in Gaza City and could spread south within weeks. Gaza’s Health Ministry now attributes 289 deaths—including 115 children—to malnutrition and lists the overall war death toll at 62,686 since October 2023. More than 2,000 people have reportedly been killed while seeking aid at distribution points or convoy routes. Despite growing international alarm, Israel’s defence minister has pledged to press ahead with a major ground offensive to seize Gaza City. Tanks massed near the border on Monday as the army confirmed operations in the Jabalia area, signalling preparations for a broader assault on the enclave’s largest urban centre. Cease-fire diplomacy remains stalled, with Hamas saying it accepted a mediator-backed proposal and accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of blocking an agreement.
