UN Security Council Except U.S. Declares Gaza Famine Man-Made Crisis, Calls for Ceasefire and Aid Lift Amid Israeli Offensive
On August 27, 2025, fourteen of the fifteen United Nations Security Council members issued a joint statement expressing alarm over the famine in Gaza, describing it as a "man-made crisis" primarily attributed to Israeli actions, including its blockade and restrictions on aid. The statement called on Israel to immediately lift all restrictions on humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza and to reverse its decision to expand military operations in the area. The council members emphasized the need to uphold international law, condemning starvation as an act of war. The United States was the sole Security Council member to abstain from endorsing the statement, with the U.S. envoy to the UN criticizing the credibility and integrity of a UN-backed report from the IPC global hunger monitoring system that confirmed the famine. In response to the situation, foreign ministers from Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain condemned Israel's recent offensive in Gaza and its announcement to establish a permanent military presence in the city. Spain also announced plans to propose a European Union initiative aimed at alleviating the famine in Gaza. The joint Security Council statement called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire to address the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
