The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has proposed a significant increase in electricity taxes for crypto miners and AI data centers, aiming to address the growing environmental impact of these industries. The proposed tax hike could reach up to 85%, translating to an additional $0.047 per kilowatt hour. This measure is intended to reduce global carbon emissions by approximately 100 million tons and generate an estimated $5.2 billion in government revenue. Crypto mining and AI data centers currently account for 2% of global electricity use and nearly 1% of global emissions, with their environmental footprint continuing to expand. IMF officials Shafik Hebous and Nate Vernon-Lin are leading this initiative, emphasizing the importance of curbing emissions from these sectors. The proposal also highlights a potential 75% rise in energy consumption by Bitcoin miners.
NEW: The IMF is proposing a direct tax on crypto mining centers of $0.047/kWh to help “drive the crypto mining industry to curb its emissions in line with global goals.” A similar direct tax would be imposed on data centers, albeit at a lower rate of $0.032 kWh. https://t.co/yHXO86VZyC
