Cody Bellinger’s defense rescued the New York Yankees on Sunday, helping the club snap a six-game skid with a 6–4 victory over the New York Mets in the Subway Series finale at Citi Field. With the Yankees nursing a two-run lead in the seventh inning, Bellinger charged a 105-mph line drive off Juan Soto, made a shoestring catch, then fired an 89.9-mph strike to first base to double up Francisco Lindor. The play, upheld on review, prompted manager Aaron Boone to label it the team’s “play of the year.” It was the second of three double plays turned by a defense that has struggled for much of the season. Aaron Judge added his 33rd home run and a tumbling catch in right field, while Paul Goldschmidt recorded an unassisted double play in the eighth. Bellinger, a former Gold Glove winner whose versatility has seen him log innings at all three outfield spots and first base, was making his first start in left field in more than a week.
