The Boston Red Sox edged the Baltimore Orioles 4–3 on Monday night in Baltimore, riding home runs from rookie Roman Anthony and outfielder Jarren Duran to preserve their lead in the American League wild-card race. Anthony opened the game with a 410-foot blast to right-center, becoming the youngest player in club history to hit a leadoff homer at 21 years and 104 days. After Baltimore built a 3–1 advantage behind Colton Cowser’s solo shot and two-run single, Duran responded with his 13th homer of the season, a three-run drive in the fifth inning that put Boston ahead to stay. Right-hander Richard Fitts, recalled to start behind opener Brennan Bernardino, allowed three runs in four-plus innings before exiting with right-biceps tightness. Garrett Whitlock struck out the side in the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman recorded his 25th save to seal the victory. Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano (10-6) surrendered all four runs over six innings, taking his first loss in eight starts. Boston improved to 72-60; the series continues Tuesday with Baltimore’s Kyle Bradish scheduled to face Boston’s Lucas Giolito.
Smith (4-7) pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in his career, facing just 23 batters on 80 pitches. https://t.co/hOpdoZo7Za
