The San Diego Padres defeated the Boston Red Sox 6–2 at Petco Park on Sunday, clinching the three-game series and extending their surge in the National League West race. Right-hander Dylan Cease limited Boston to two earned runs over six innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven before an All-Star-laden bullpen escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Jason Adam hit Masataka Yoshida with his first pitch but fanned two batters, and Adrian Morejon ended the threat with a strikeout of rookie Roman Anthony. San Diego did its damage with two outs. Luis Arraez opened the scoring with a two-run double in the third inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. added an RBI single in the fifth, and former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts singled and stole second ahead of a bases-loaded walk to Jake Cronenworth. Brayan Bello was charged with five runs in 5⅔ innings for Boston. The Padres, now 66-52 after winning 11 of their last 14, remain in pursuit of the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. Boston fell to 65-54 and trails Toronto by four games in the American League East. San Diego’s series win was secured two nights earlier on Ramón Laureano’s 10th-inning walk-off single.
