The Colorado Rockies, owners of Major League Baseball’s worst record, stunned the National League-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 8–3 at Coors Field on Wednesday, roughing up two-way star Shohei Ohtani in his first career pitching start in Denver. Ohtani (0-1) allowed five earned runs and nine hits over four innings, matching a career high for hits surrendered. The 31-year-old right-hander was struck on the right knee by a 93-mph line drive in the fourth but remained in the game to finish the inning before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth. At the plate he doubled, walked and extended his on-base streak to 18 games while appearing in his 1,000th major-league contest. Colorado pounded out 16 hits, led by Hunter Goodman’s three knocks and three RBIs. Rookie right-hander Tanner Gordon (4-5) scattered six hits and one run across six innings for the win, while the Rockies improved to 37-90 after taking seven of their last nine games. The defeat was the Dodgers’ sixth in their past 10 outings but they still hold a two-game lead over San Diego in the NL West. Los Angeles will send Clayton Kershaw to the mound in Thursday’s series finale against Colorado right-hander Chase Dollander.
