Major League Baseball statisticians confirmed an unprecedented scheduling oddity on Sunday: the Pittsburgh Pirates became the first club ever to sweep a three-game series with shutouts and then be swept in the same fashion in their next series. According to OptaSTATS, no other team has recorded consecutive series of at least three games in which it both delivered and suffered shutout sweeps. Pittsburgh opened the week at PNC Park by blanking the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0, 1-0 and 5-0, stretching the Pirates’ winning streak to six games and outscoring opponents 43-4 over that span. The Cardinals were held scoreless across 27 innings for the first time in nearly a decade, while the Pirates logged three shutouts in one series for the first time since 1976. The momentum reversed instantly in Seattle. The Mariners silenced the same Pirates lineup 6-0 on Friday, 1-0 behind seven shutout innings from Luis Castillo on Saturday, and 1-0 on Sunday as George Kirby struck out nine over 6⅓ innings and Randy Arozarena supplied the decisive homer. The trio of games marked the first time the Mariners had posted three consecutive shutouts in their 48-year history. The six straight shutout games—three for and three against—tie the major-league record for consecutive contests without a run scored by either the Pirates or their opponents. Pittsburgh, which has fallen to 0-3 on its current road trip, visits Kansas City on Monday, while Seattle travels to New York to face the Yankees on Tuesday.
