U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday called for pitcher Roger Clemens to be "put in the Baseball Hall of Fame, NOW," reviving the long-running debate over the seven-time Cy Young Award winner’s eligibility. In a Truth Social post dated Aug. 24, Trump said he had played golf a day earlier with Clemens and his son, Kacy, and praised the right-hander’s 354 career victories, two World Series titles and 11 All-Star selections. Clemens was named in the 2007 Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drugs but has consistently denied using steroids and was acquitted in 2012 of charges that he lied to Congress. Trump dismissed the allegations as unproven, adding that the Hall should not repeat what he described as the "stupidity" of delaying Pete Rose’s consideration until after the hitter’s death in 2024. Major League Baseball does not determine Hall of Fame inductees; candidates are elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and, if unsuccessful after 10 ballots, by era-based committees. Clemens appeared on the BBWAA ballot from 2013 to 2022 without reaching the required 75 % threshold and fell short again on a 16-member Contemporary Baseball Era committee vote in 2022. He is expected to be eligible for another veterans committee ballot in December 2026, but rule changes adopted earlier this year could remove his name if he receives fewer than five votes. Trump’s intervention adds political attention to a process usually confined to baseball insiders, but it does not alter the formal voting procedures governing induction in Cooperstown.
