The Mayan, a landmark nightclub and live-music venue on Hill Street in downtown Los Angeles, will give its final performance on 13 September after management announced the site’s permanent closure at the end of the month. Patrons are being invited to weekly farewell events leading up to the last night. Constructed in 1927, the building is one of the city’s best-known examples of Mayan Revival architecture and has held Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument status since 1989. Operated as a nightclub for 35 years, the venue previously served as a musical-comedy theater, a center for Mexican cinema and music, and an adult film house, and it has appeared in films including “The Bodyguard” and “A Night at the Roxbury.” Management did not disclose reasons for closing or future plans for the property. While the historic designation can delay demolition for up to a year, it does not guarantee preservation, leaving the long-term fate of the nearly century-old structure uncertain.
