The federal government of Mexico, in coordination with the Mexico City administration, has organized a series of events to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the founding of Tenochtitlán, the ancient Mexica capital. The celebrations will take place primarily in Mexico City's Zócalo from July 11 to July 27, 2025. Key highlights include a videomapping spectacle titled "Memoria Luminosa. México-Tenochtitlan: 700 Años," which features nightly projections on the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, narrating seven centuries of the city's history with immersive visuals and sound. Monumental pre-Hispanic sculptures, including five large-scale Mexica figures, have been installed in the Zócalo as part of the festivities. On July 26, a scenographic play involving 838 actors will reenact pivotal moments of the Mexica people. Additional activities include musical performances, operas in the Nahuatl language, exhibitions, and theater productions. Despite heavy rain during the opening night, the event attracted dozens of attendees, reflecting efforts to connect contemporary generations with Mexico's pre-Hispanic heritage. The celebrations were announced by Mexico City officials Clara Brugada and Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of Tenochtitlán's legacy. Concurrently, the city is preparing for the Medio Maratón CDMX 2025 on July 13, which is expected to gather over 30,000 runners and will cause temporary traffic and transportation adjustments.
