Beach Hazard Statements Issued for Lake Michigan, Lake Erie Beaches with 3-7 Foot Waves and Life-Threatening Rip Currents Through Friday

The National Weather Service offices in Chicago and Milwaukee have issued Beach Hazard Statements warning of dangerous swimming conditions along Lake Michigan and Lake Erie beaches. Starting Thursday afternoon through Friday morning, waves are expected to reach heights of 3 to 7 feet, accompanied by choppy waters and life-threatening rip currents. Northwestern Indiana and southwestern Michigan beaches are particularly at risk, with gusty northwest to northeast winds driving hazardous lake currents, especially near piers and breakwalls. Authorities have urged swimmers to stay out of the water during this period due to the increased risk of drowning and other water-related accidents. These conditions are expected to persist through Thursday morning, with continued warnings extending into Friday.
