Colorado’s Lee Fire expanded to roughly 113,378 acres on Sunday, making it the fifth-largest wildfire on record in the state. The blaze, burning in Garfield and Rio Blanco counties about 250 miles west of Denver, was just 7% contained as gusty winds and low humidity accelerated its spread. State corrections officials relocated all 179 people housed at the minimum-security Rifle Correctional Center after the fast-moving flames approached the facility. The prisoners were transferred about 150 miles away to the Buena Vista Correctional Complex. No injuries or structural damage to the prison have been reported. More than 1,000 firefighters, supported by aircraft and ground crews, are working to keep the fire west of Colorado Highway 13 and north of County Road 5. Health authorities issued air-quality alerts for surrounding communities, and residents of remote mountain areas remain under evacuation orders or advisories. Investigators say lightning likely sparked the Lee Fire on 2 August. With drought-stricken vegetation and several days of red-flag weather, officials warn that containment could remain challenging in the coming days.
