U.S. Forest Service investigators are asking the public for help identifying an all-terrain vehicle driver who may have sparked the Monroe Canyon Fire, which has scorched more than 5,000 acres in Sevier County, Utah, since it was reported on Sunday, July 13. Witnesses saw a dark-blue, two-door ATV with red and white markings and a cracked lower passenger windshield on the west side of Monroe Mountain around 2:30 p.m., roughly the time the blaze began, Fishlake National Forest officials said. The wildfire remains 0% contained and has forced authorities to expand evacuation orders to the Elk Country Cabins area, adding to earlier departures near Monroe Canyon, Magleby and Cove Mountain. About 40 to 50 structures are under threat, and several sections of Fishlake National Forest have been closed to the public while nearly 200 firefighters work to protect cabins in the Manning Meadows area. Crews are battling the fire under a National Weather Service red flag warning, with high temperatures, gusty winds and low humidity creating critical conditions. Anyone with information about the ATV or the fire’s ignition is urged to contact the Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations Unit at 801-388-3402.
