Hawaii has declared a state of emergency and ordered evacuations from low-lying coastal areas as a tsunami approaches the archipelago. Authorities said the decision followed reports of waves as high as seven feet measured west of the islands and warnings that larger surges could reach shore within minutes. Shortly after the alerts were issued, a four-foot wave was recorded at Haleiwa on Oahu’s north shore, confirming the arrival of the tsunami. Emergency management officials urged residents and tourists to move to higher ground and advised vessels to leave harbors until the all-clear is given. Airports and critical infrastructure remain operational, but local governments have activated emergency shelters and suspended public transport in the most exposed zones. Officials said they are monitoring wave gauges and will update guidance as additional data become available.
