Since June 21, the Tokara Islands in southwestern Japan have experienced a series of earthquakes, with the Japan Meteorological Agency recording over 1,700 tremors by mid-July. The seismic activity has prompted authorities to hold emergency briefings and issue warnings. Following a strong quake on July 3, residents of a small island in the region were urged to evacuate, with dozens of people leaving the affected islands over the subsequent days. The quakes have continued, including a magnitude 4 tremor reported on Akusekijima Island. Additionally, minor earthquakes with maximum intensities of 1 were recorded in several other prefectures, including Miyazaki, Ibaraki, Tokyo, and Wakayama. Authorities have also taken measures to bolster tsunami defenses amid the ongoing seismic activity.
