A late-season monsoon storm swept across the Phoenix metropolitan area on the evening of Aug. 22, delivering the first measurable rainfall at Sky Harbor International Airport this month—0.04 inch—after a mostly dry summer. Some neighborhoods logged more than half an inch, while wind gusts of about 35 mph pushed dust through the Valley. The storm caused scattered damage, downing trees and sparking a house fire that firefighters believe was triggered by lightning. Utility providers Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project reported a combined 30,500 outages at the height of the event; service was largely restored by Friday morning. Minor street flooding was reported in low-lying areas, and the National Weather Service issued a brief Flood Advisory for parts of Imperial County, California, as the system moved west. The rainfall offered little relief from a prolonged heat wave. Phoenix logged an overnight low of 92 °F on Aug. 23, breaking the city’s daily record for the warmest minimum temperature. Daytime highs are forecast to approach or exceed 110 °F, and an Extreme Heat Warning remains in force through Sunday, Aug. 24. Officials continue to urge residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and monitor vulnerable individuals. Forecasters expect storm chances to diminish over the weekend before another surge of monsoonal moisture lifts probabilities to as high as 50 % early next week. Emergency managers are advising motorists to avoid flooded roadways and stay alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
