Country music artist Pat Green said his family suffered a “heartbreaking and deeply personal loss” in the floods that swept Central Texas over the July 4 weekend. In a statement posted Monday, the Fort Worth-based singer asked for privacy while his family mourns. Green’s wife, Kori, later disclosed that the singer’s younger brother, John, John’s wife, Julia, and two of their children were swept away when the Guadalupe River overflowed near Kerrville. Local media report the couple’s bodies have been recovered while search crews continue looking for the children. The flash floods, described by officials as a once-in-a-century event, pushed the Guadalupe up more than 26 feet in under an hour. By Tuesday, authorities put the statewide death toll at 104, including about 84 fatalities in Kerr County and at least 28 children from Camp Mystic, a nearby summer camp. Several people remain missing as rescue teams comb the area. Green postponed a July 5 show in Luckenbach because of the disaster and said he is “grieving alongside countless Texans.” Emergency crews have rescued more than 850 people so far, while state and local officials work to restore power, clear debris and establish relief funds for the Hill Country communities hit hardest.
