Torrential rain on Tuesday triggered widespread flash flooding across parts of Virginia, North Carolina and the Florida Panhandle, prompting emergency measures and a succession of weather alerts from the National Weather Service. In Virginia, the NWS issued a rare Flash Flood Emergency for Petersburg and neighbouring Colonial Heights between 2:15 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. EDT after intense downpours swamped low-lying areas. By late afternoon, city officials declared a local state of emergency in Petersburg, citing severe flooding that made some areas impassable. Farther south, streets in Burlington, North Carolina, were submerged as heavy bands of rain moved through central portions of the state. Flash Flood Warnings were posted for Alamance, Guilford, Forsyth, Person and several other counties into the night, with alerts also covering Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Roxboro. The system’s reach extended to the Gulf Coast, where Bay County, Florida—including Panama City, Lynn Haven and surrounding beaches—remained under Flash Flood Warnings. Forecasters said several additional inches of rain were possible as showers rotated ahead of tropical disturbance Invest 93. Authorities urged residents in all affected areas to avoid driving through high water and to monitor further updates, noting that additional flooding is possible while the slow-moving weather pattern persists.
