Flash flooding returned to Durham, North Carolina late Wednesday, prompting multiple swift-water rescues as slow-moving thunderstorms dumped heavy rain across the city, local public-safety officials said. The storms also produced renewed flooding in neighboring Orange County and new inundation in Oxford, according to a WRAL meteorologist tracking the system. Durham’s mayor urged residents to prepare for additional high water as the storm line continued to push through the region. The area is still recovering from what forecasters described as a once-in-a-millennium rainfall event three days ago, which saturated soils and heightened the risk of fresh flooding. No injuries or fatalities had been confirmed as of early Thursday, but authorities warned that water levels could rise rapidly overnight.
