The National Weather Service issued a rapid succession of tornado, severe-thunderstorm and flash-flood warnings across west-central Minnesota on Sunday, July 27, as a potent summer storm system swept through the region. Tornado warnings were in effect at various points for Appleton, Montevideo, Watson, Litchfield, Cold Spring and surrounding towns from shortly after 1 p.m. until at least 6:45 p.m. CDT. Forecasters warned residents to seek shelter immediately as radar indicated rotation capable of producing twisters. Parallel severe-thunderstorm warnings covered a wider area stretching from Madison and Dawson to Buffalo and Annandale. The storms were forecast to generate hail up to two inches in diameter and straight-line wind gusts reaching 70 mph, posing a threat to roofs, vehicles and power lines. Heavy rain accompanying the system triggered flash-flood warnings for Morris, Hancock and Chokio through 8 p.m. CDT. The Weather Service advised motorists to avoid water-covered roadways and urged the public to remain alert for additional bulletins as the storm complex moved east.
