Five-time NBA All-Star John Wall said on Tuesday he is retiring from professional basketball, bringing an 11-season career to a close. The 34-year-old point guard announced the decision in a video posted to social media. Selected first overall by the Washington Wizards in 2010, Wall became the franchise’s all-time leader in assists (5,282) and steals (976) and earned five consecutive All-Star berths from 2014 to 2018. He also captured the 2014 Slam Dunk title and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2016-17, when he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists. Wall averaged 18.7 points and 8.9 assists over 647 regular-season games with Washington, the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Clippers, amassing an estimated $276 million in salary. A ruptured Achilles tendon in 2019 and subsequent leg injuries limited him to 82 total appearances after the 2018-19 campaign, and he has not played in the league since January 2023. The former Kentucky standout said he plans to remain involved in the sport. Amazon confirmed that Wall will join its new “NBA on Prime” studio team when the streaming service begins its 11-year U.S. rights deal on Oct. 24.
