The Los Angeles Lakers have signed five-time All-Star guard Luka Doncic to a three-year, $165 million contract extension that keeps the 26-year-old under team control through the 2028-29 season. Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka called the deal a “monumental moment,” saying Doncic’s “on-court dominance and passion is without compare.” Doncic arrived in Los Angeles in a February blockbuster that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas and immediately lifted the Lakers to the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Over 28 regular-season games with the club he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals. For his career the Slovenian guard owns averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists and ranks third all-time in regular-season scoring average. In a social-media post announcing the extension, Doncic also pledged to donate $5 million to support 77 young athletes worldwide, a nod to his jersey number. The commitment follows an offseason in which he unveiled a slimmer physique after adopting a gluten-free, low-sugar diet and a new fitness program as he prepares for EuroBasket later this month.
