An upcoming book on women’s basketball, “On Her Game” by USA TODAY Sports journalist Christine Brennan, discloses that Caitlin Clark gave a verbal commitment to play for Notre Dame before ultimately choosing her home-state Iowa Hawkeyes in 2019. Former Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said she believed she had secured the elite guard after watching her at an AAU tournament, only to learn later that Clark was still in active contact with Iowa’s staff and would reverse course. Clark’s decision to remain in Iowa proved pivotal. She scored 3,951 points for the Hawkeyes, became the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer, led the program to consecutive national-title games in 2023 and 2024, and was selected first overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft. McGraw told Brennan that while Notre Dame fans would have welcomed Clark, the guard “made a great decision” that shaped both her career and the popularity of women’s college basketball.
