The University of Oklahoma has begun looking into screenshots circulating online that purport to show quarterback John Mateer tagging two Venmo payments made on 20 Nov. 2022 with the phrase “sports gambling.” The transfers were allegedly sent to former Washington State teammate Richard Roaten while Mateer was still enrolled at Washington State. Mateer, who transferred to Oklahoma this offseason and is projected to start for the No. 18 Sooners, has told school officials he has never participated in sports wagering, according to a report by ESPN citing unnamed sources. College athletes are barred under NCAA rules from betting on any collegiate sport and risk the loss of eligibility if found in violation. Oklahoma compliance staff became aware of the matter late Monday and are gathering information, the source said. The screenshots have since been removed from the public transaction feed, leaving open whether they were authentic or manipulated. Neither the university nor the NCAA has announced formal disciplinary action, and Mateer remains in line to lead the Sooners when they open the season at home against Illinois State on 30 Aug.
