Dutch prosecutors have arrested a 22-year-old man residing at an Amsterdam asylum-seeker reception centre on suspicion of murdering 17-year-old student Lisa as she cycled home from a night out in the early hours of Wednesday. The teenager, from the nearby town of Abcoude, called the emergency number at around 3:30 a.m. to say she was being followed. Officers found her a short time later on Holterbergweg, close to the Johan Cruijff Arena, with fatal stab wounds to her neck and upper body. Head of public prosecution René de Beukelaer told reporters the suspect is also under investigation for the rape of a woman in Amsterdam on 15 August and an attempted sexual assault on 10 August. DNA evidence and witness statements led detectives to conclude the same individual is likely responsible for all three attacks, police chief Peter Holla said. Mayor Femke Halsema condemned the killing as “appalling and unforgivable” and announced additional measures to improve the safety of women and girls in the capital. The suspect, whose nationality has not been released, is expected to appear in court on Monday for a preliminary hearing on charges of murder and rape while the broader probe continues.
