A pre-dawn fire beneath an eastbound Port Authority Trans-Hudson train forced the evacuation of Newport Station in Jersey City on Monday, disrupting rush-hour travel between New Jersey and Lower Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the blaze began at about 6:19 a.m., sending thick smoke into at least one railcar before flames rose from the tracks. Thirteen passengers were treated for smoke inhalation, nine of whom were transported to area hospitals for further evaluation, according to the agency. PATH service between New Jersey and New York City was temporarily suspended while firefighters extinguished the blaze and crews ventilated the station. The Port Authority said investigators are examining the train and track infrastructure to determine what sparked the fire. The agency did not give a timetable for when a full service schedule would resume.
