A car erupted in flames inside the south tube of the Lincoln Tunnel at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 8 July, forcing officials to close all lanes of the vital Hudson River crossing for roughly an hour. The shutdown occurred at the height of the evening rush, backing up traffic on both sides of the river and temporarily closing the adjoining Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. The Port Authority reported delays of up to 60 minutes for motorists heading into New York City. Bus service in and out of the terminal faced delays of as much as 45 minutes, while NJ Transit, PATH and NY Waterway ferries cross-honored tickets to keep commuters moving. Firefighters from the FDNY and Port Authority extinguished the blaze shortly after 6 p.m. One person was transported to Mount Sinai West with unspecified injuries, and five others were treated on site for minor injuries, officials said. Traffic was moving again by 6:30 p.m., though authorities warned of residual congestion while they investigated the cause of the fire.
