The San Francisco 49ers edged the Las Vegas Raiders 22-19 in a preseason contest at Allegiant Stadium after kicker Jake Moody drilled a 59-yard field goal as time expired. Moody, who had earlier missed from 53 yards, finished the night with five makes in six attempts and accounted for all but one of San Francisco’s points. “I hit it really well,” he told reporters, adding that he was knocked to the turf by a rusher and did not see the ball clear the uprights. While the victory helped solidify Moody’s place on the roster, it came at a cost. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said starting right guard Dominick Puni suffered what is believed to be a posterior-cruciate ligament injury and will miss “a few weeks.” The team also lost two running backs: veteran Patrick Taylor Jr., who dislocated a shoulder and is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks, and undrafted rookie Corey Kiner, who sustained a likely high-ankle sprain and faces a similar timetable. Puni’s setback leaves the 49ers without both of their first-string guards, as Ben Bartch is already nursing an elbow issue. Shanahan indicated the coaching staff could shift reserve lineman Connor Colby to the right side while evaluating external options. At running back, the absences of Taylor and Kiner leave Jeff Wilson Jr. and Ke'Shaughn Vaughn as the only healthy options heading into the final week of the preseason.
Yup. The competition never ends, but today was a dream day for Brant Boyer too: He got to simulate season-like pressure for Jake Moody, who responded with 2 clutch kicks (including a 59-yarder) in the final minute. And it all came after a miss — so there was requisite adversity https://t.co/47d2kNKGGO
