Fifth-round rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders made an unexpected start for the Cleveland Browns on Friday night and delivered a composed performance, throwing two touchdown passes to wideout Kaden Davis as Cleveland beat the Carolina Panthers 30-10 in the teams’ preseason opener at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Pressed into duty with Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel sidelined by hamstring injuries and veteran Joe Flacco held out, Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards, added 19 rushing yards, avoided turnovers and posted a 106.8 passer rating while guiding the offense for nearly three quarters. His scoring strikes covered seven and 12 yards, both coming in the second quarter, and helped erase an early 7-0 deficit created by Panthers starter Bryce Young, who finished 4-for-6 for 58 yards and a touchdown before exiting after two series. Head coach Kevin Stefanski praised Sanders’ poise but declined to update a quarterback depth chart that also includes Flacco and, when healthy, Pickett and Gabriel. Cleveland visits the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 16, when Stefanski is expected to give additional snaps to competitors in what remains an open race for the Browns’ starting job.
