Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders sustained an oblique strain during a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday and was held out for the remainder of the session, the team said. Cleveland classified the 21-year-old as day-to-day and ruled him out of Thursday’s practice. The injury leaves Sanders unlikely to appear in Saturday’s preseason game in Philadelphia. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said third-round pick Dillon Gabriel will start if his own hamstring tightness subsides; Gabriel was limited earlier in the week but practiced on Wednesday. Another reserve, Kenny Pickett, also remains restricted by a hamstring issue, while veteran Joe Flacco is being preserved for the regular season and is not expected to play in the preseason. Sanders, a fifth-round selection from Colorado, had positioned himself for a second consecutive start after completing 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns’ 30–10 victory over the Carolina Panthers last week. His setback extends a run of soft-tissue problems that has complicated Cleveland’s evaluation of its quarterback depth chart during training camp.
