OpenAI has announced Stargate Norway, its first AI data center initiative in Europe, located near Narvik in Northern Norway. The project is a joint venture between OpenAI, Nscale Global Holdings, and Norwegian industrial firm Aker ASA, each holding a 50% stake in the facility. The data center is planned to deliver 230 megawatts (MW) of capacity initially, with ambitions to expand by an additional 290 MW in the future, totaling 520 MW. It aims to support 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, utilizing Nvidia's advanced GB300 Superchip processors connected via NVLink. The facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy, primarily hydroelectric power, aligning with sustainability goals. This $1 billion gigafactory is part of OpenAI's broader Stargate infrastructure platform under the OpenAI for Countries program, designed to support advanced AI development and deployment in Europe. The announcement comes amid increasing demand for AI computing resources globally, with other tech companies like Google also taking steps to manage energy consumption at their AI data centers.
