Australian actor Julian McMahon, best known for playing the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Troy in Ryan Murphy’s television drama “Nip/Tuck” and the Marvel villain Doctor Doom in the mid-2000s “Fantastic Four” films, died on 2 July in Clearwater, Florida, according to a statement from his wife, Kelly McMahon. He was 56. The Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office has since determined that McMahon died from lung metastasis caused by head-and-neck metastatic cancer; the manner of death was ruled natural. His wife’s earlier announcement on 4 July described the actor’s passing as peaceful following a private battle with the disease. A former model and the son of one-time Australian prime minister Sir William McMahon, the Sydney-born performer built a diverse résumé after relocating to the United States in the early 1990s. He broke through on the WB’s “Charmed,” received a Golden Globe nomination during “Nip/Tuck’s” 2003–10 run on FX, and later headlined CBS’s “FBI: Most Wanted.” Recent credits include Netflix’s White House-set mystery “The Residence” and the forthcoming surfing drama “The Surfer” opposite Nicolas Cage. Industry colleagues have paid tribute, with Alyssa Milano, Ioan Gruffudd and Cage praising McMahon’s talent and generosity. He is survived by his wife of eleven years and his daughter, Madison.
