Pakistani prison authorities allowed former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan to speak with his two sons for about 90 minutes via WhatsApp, according to people familiar with the conversation. Khan told the court in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail that he now has access to newspapers and television after months of restrictions. Khan’s sister Aleema Khan said the brothers intend to visit Pakistan soon but are waiting for replacement National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), which she says were misplaced. She added that visa applications had been filed, disputing embassy claims that no paperwork was received. Punjab information minister Azma Bukhari called on the sons to spell out their intentions before travelling, while PTI stalwart Fawad Chaudhry described the authorities’ decision to facilitate the call as a positive step. Separately, Aleema Khan questioned the merit of PTI member Mashal Yousafzai’s recent election to the Senate, arguing that the party should follow a transparent, merit-based process when filling seats.
