A five-storey residential block in Karachi’s Lyari Baghdadi district collapsed on the morning of 4 July, killing 27 people and injuring at least eight, police and health officials said. Rescuers recovered the last bodies on Sunday after a three-day operation that involved Rescue 1122, the Edhi welfare service and heavy machinery brought into the area’s narrow lanes. Up to 100 residents were believed to be inside the structure when it crumbled shortly after 10 a.m. Witnesses reported hearing cracking sounds minutes before the building gave way. Adjacent structures were evacuated, and authorities sealed the immediate vicinity after debris damaged nearby homes and dozens of parked rickshaws. The Sindh Building Control Authority had declared the block unsafe and, according to officials, issued multiple evacuation notices between 2022 and 2024—claims some occupants dispute. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered an inquiry and promised action against those responsible, while Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi blamed continued occupancy of condemned buildings for the tragedy. Police have registered a case against the building’s developer and contractor, and the city has renewed a drive to vacate more than 480 other structures deemed dangerous.
