Authorities in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province have arrested at least 11 people, including local tribal chieftain Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, after a video circulated online showing a man and a woman being shot dead in what officials say was an honour killing. Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti said the arrests were made during raids in the Degari area near Quetta and that further operations are under way. Police have registered a case at the Hanna Urak and Degari stations under the Anti-Terrorism Act and murder statutes, naming 15 suspects. District officials said the number of people in custody has risen to 13 as additional individuals seen in the footage were identified using national identity-database records. Investigators believe the couple were killed last month, around the Eid al-Adha holiday, after marrying against family wishes on the orders of a local jirga, or tribal council. The video’s emergence has renewed scrutiny of honour killings in Pakistan; the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan recorded at least 405 such murders nationwide in 2024.
