Filipina tennis player Alex Eala upset world No. 15 Clara Tauson 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(11) in the US Open first round, becoming the first athlete representing the Philippines to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match in the Open era. The 20-year-old, ranked No. 56 and making her debut in the tournament’s main draw, saved four match points and rallied from 1-5 down in the deciding tiebreak before converting her fifth opportunity to close out the two-hour, 58-minute contest on Grandstand Court. Eala’s victory caps a breakthrough season in which she has climbed nearly 150 ranking places and earned more prize money in seven months than in her previous four years on tour. She will face either Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or the United States’ Claire Liu in the second round.
