San Francisco institution Swan Oyster Depot is facing an online backlash after food influencer Kat Ensign posted a photograph that appeared to show a navy cap emblazoned with the numbers “45” and “47,” a reference to former U.S. president Donald Trump’s past and prospective terms in office. The image, reportedly taken inside the Polk Street seafood counter, triggered hundreds of critical comments on Reddit and a surge of one- and two-star reviews on Yelp. Yelp responded on Wednesday by placing an “Unusual Activity Alert” on Swan Oyster Depot’s business page and temporarily suspending the ability to post new reviews while it investigates. The move is intended to curb so-called review bombing, a practice the platform discourages when controversy unrelated to food or service drives sudden feedback spikes. Opened in 1912 and run by the Sancimino family, Swan Oyster Depot is one of San Francisco’s most lauded eateries, drawing daily queues and praise from the late chef-journalist Anthony Bourdain. It has weathered controversy before: in 2021 the restaurant was accused of anti-Asian behavior, prompting an earlier Yelp freeze. The counter last served customers on 3 July and is closed for a previously scheduled vacation until 14 July, according to its social-media post. The owners have not commented on the latest allegations. Ensign also did not respond to requests for clarification about when the photo was taken.
