Minnesota Senator Tina Smith Hospitalized for Overnight Observation

Sen. Tina Smith, a Minnesota Democrat, was admitted to George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday after feeling unwell while working at the U.S. Capitol, her office said. The 67-year-old senator consulted the Capitol physician, who recommended more extensive tests and advised that she remain overnight "out of an abundance of caution." Smith is expected to resume her duties shortly, according to the statement. Her brief absence coincides with the Senate’s marathon “vote-a-rama” on a rescissions package, temporarily trimming Democrats’ narrow voting margin. Smith, a former lieutenant governor who has served in the Senate since 2018, previously announced she will not seek re-election when her current term ends in 2026.
