Jurors in Minnesota on Tuesday were shown police body-camera video of state Senator Nicole Mitchell’s arrest as her trial on first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools entered its second day. The footage, recorded during an early-morning call to her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes on 22 April 2024, depicts Mitchell dressed in black and retreating to the basement before officers detain her. According to the criminal complaint, a backpack recovered at the scene contained two laptops, a cellphone, personal identification and a sock-covered flashlight. In the video, Mitchell can be heard saying, “Clearly I’m not good at this.” Prosecutors contend the senator unlawfully entered the residence to obtain property belonging to her recently deceased father after family communication was cut off. Mitchell has pleaded not guilty, previously asserting she was assisting a relative with Alzheimer’s disease. Jury selection concluded Monday, and opening statements began shortly after the video was played. The trial continues this week in Becker County District Court.
