Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte said on 22 Aug 2025 that he has referred two more high-profile individuals to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution over suspected mortgage fraud. Pulte did not identify the targets or describe the alleged misconduct but indicated the material had already been turned over to federal prosecutors. The latest action widens a crackdown that began earlier this year when Pulte forwarded evidence against Biden-appointed Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook for what the agency described as occupancy-related mortgage fraud. Pulte has pledged to pursue “anyone” who misstates property information to secure favorable loan terms, arguing the practice raises costs for honest borrowers and distorts housing-market data. Heightened scrutiny of housing-finance abuses is also emerging at the state level. On 25 Aug, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a civil suit accusing Scottsdale residents Edward Trenton Albarracin and Gretchen Marie Zamjahn of running a multi-million-dollar scheme that tricked homeowners—many of them senior citizens—into signing over their deeds. Mayes said bank accounts and real-estate holdings tied to the defendants have been placed under court supervision while the case proceeds.
