Coinbase has urged the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to clarify digital asset regulations, amid shifts in the regulatory outlook under the incoming Trump administration. The cryptocurrency exchange has outlined a regulatory roadmap for the SEC, emphasizing the need for a clear taxonomy to distinguish digital commodities from securities. Coinbase's proposal includes 36 recommendations aimed at bringing clarity, fueling innovation, and positioning the U.S. at the forefront of the crypto industry. The SEC has begun the process of regulatory overhaul with the initiation of a series of roundtables led by Crypto Task Force Head Commissioner Hester Peirce. These discussions aim to iron out how the crypto industry should be regulated, marking a shift from the previous administration's approach under former Chair Gary Gensler. President Donald Trump's administration seeks to relax crypto regulations to boost innovation in the sector. Industry experts and critics, including John Reed Stark from John Reed Stark Consulting, who recently published a 78-page takedown of crypto, and Miles Jennings from a16z crypto, who contributed to a 50-page screed on crypto issues, are participating in these roundtables. Other participants include representatives from Better Markets, Duke Financial Economic Center, Cooley, Brookwood P.C., Delphi Ventures, Georgetown Law, Steptoe, CahillNXT, and BakerHostetler. The discussions reflect a broader effort to create a well-defined framework for the crypto industry in the U.S., with some panelists questioning the applicability of the Howey test to the sector and mentioning the 'wholesale demolition' of previous crypto enforcement efforts.
