The ECOFIN Council has reviewed Romania's fiscal situation and concluded that the country's austerity law is insufficient to address its budget deficit. Romania has been given a deadline of October 15, 2025, to present additional measures to reduce the deficit. While ECOFIN decided not to impose sanctions on Romania following the government's adoption of an austerity package, it recommended a considerable tightening of fiscal policy. The council also emphasized the need for Romania to implement reforms and investments. Additionally, the European Commission expects Romania to introduce new measures to ensure the independence of the judiciary and media. Romanian Finance Minister Nazare presented the austerity measures during the ECOFIN evaluation.
