Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan ordered all ministries and subordinate agencies to slash overseas travel, insisting that delegations be kept to the minimum and each trip receive his personal sign-off. A government memorandum dated 9 July says requests must arrive at least five days in advance and justifies the measure as a way to curb public spending. The travel curb is the latest step in a broader austerity programme aimed at narrowing Romania’s budget deficit. Bolojan has already announced the closure or sale of loss-making state-owned enterprises, demanded the replacement of EximBank’s chief after a costly property sub-lease and signalled a second legislative package within weeks to reform special pensions, state-company boards and central-local administration. The nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians responded by filing a motion of no confidence on 9 July, branding the policies “draconian”. The document is co-signed by lawmakers from SOS, POT and several independents—enough to table the motion but, by the party’s own admission, short of the votes required for adoption. Parliamentary leaders have scheduled its presentation for 10 July and a debate and ballot for 14 July.
