Russian President Vladimir Putin on 18 August telephoned the leaders of India, Brazil and South Africa to brief them on the outcomes of his 15 August summit with U.S. President Donald Trump at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, according to official readouts released in New Delhi, Brasília and Pretoria. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote that Putin shared “insights” from the meeting and said both sides would maintain close contact. Brazil’s presidential office said its 30-minute call covered the summit’s discussion of Ukraine and acknowledged Brazil’s role in the China-Brazil-led “Group of Friends for Peace.” South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Kremlin noted, voiced support for diplomatic efforts toward a settlement in Ukraine. The Kremlin added that Putin intends to continue updating other foreign partners, including Central Asian allies, in the coming days. The outreach follows the nearly three-hour Alaska talks, which focused on global security and prospects for ending the war in Ukraine, while Trump is holding separate consultations with European leaders.
